Electric showers connect directly to the incoming cold water supply (with the exception of the Mira Elite 'pumped electric' and 'all-in-one' power shower equipment). For this reason, an electric shower is dependent on the pressure and flow rate of the supply. An electric shower only heats water as it is required and because it only requires a cold supply can often be a preferred option to a mixer shower that requires a store of hot water and a hot/cold feed.

Electric showers are available in 'manual' or 'thermostatic' versions. A thermostatic shower stabilises the output temperature of the water at the shower head regardless of incoming fluctuations in temperature or pressure, whereas a manual shower can suffer from swings in output temperature should incoming water conditions vary (i.e other demands are made on household cold water supply occasioning pressure drop like toilet flushing, washing machines, baths, basins etc).
